This Braaibroodjie recipe takes the traditional recipe a step further. Using Sourdough with Camembert, Green Peppers, Onions, and Bacon will guarantee that you have a gourmet Braaibroodjie to impress your friends with. South Africans are known to Braai/BBQ some meat simply as an excuse to have some Braaibroodjies or Toasties as its called here in Australia.

 BeerCharcoal use 6 Beers pp. | Briquettes use 8 Beers pp. | Wood use 12 Beers pp.
 OZ Braai Toeknyp Rooster / BBQ Basket
 Wood, Charcoal / Briquette Braai / BBQAlternatively use a gas BBQ but only on days where there is a Total Fire Ban!
 Braai Fuel - Wood, Charcoal, BriquettesI prefer wood because... 12 beers
Braaibroodjie Ingredients
 12 Slices of Sourdough BreadAlternative Bread: White, Rye, Brown, Whole wheat, Ciabatta etc
 3 Camembert Cheese 125gAbout half a Camembert cut into thin strips per toasty
 2 Large Onions Cut in RingsOr finely chopped
 1 Green pepperCut into thin strips
 2 Rashers of bacon per toastyAdd or remove bacon as required
Prepare the Braai

By now you should know the drill. If not, make a fire (in your Braai/BBQ at home or at the campsite), get some beers and look busy.

Disclaimer: Failing to look busy might get you assigned to undesirable tasks.

Fry The Onions and Green Peppers

Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion rings and green peppers over medium heat till soft and caramelised.

Prepare the Braaibroodjies

Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter. Place half the slices buttered side down on a cutting board or bbq grid. Add bacon, onion and green peppers, camembert cheese and Mrs Balls Chutney. Top each sandwich with the other slice of bread with the butter on the outside. The butter will give the toasty a nice golden brown colour.

"Braaing" / Toasting the Braaibroodjies

Add the Braaibroodjies in a grid that can close. The OZ Braai BBQ Basket grid can take 6 Braaibroodjies at a time. Braai over mild coals, regularly turning the grid until both sides of the toasty is golden brown and the cheese melted. Be mindful as it only takes two sips of beer to burn your toasties.

Serve immediately as a side with your Braai'd / BBQ'd meat.
