Unless you’re in South Africa, you could forgive the average Joe for thinking a barbeque and a braai are one and the same – or at least very similar. It’s difficult to adequately explain what a braai is to someone who hasn’t been lucky enough to share in the experience.

“Well, it’s like a barbeque, Only better.”

“Ha! What could be better than a barbeque?”

‘Braai’ is Afrikaans for ‘barbeque’ or ‘roast’ and, similar to what the barbie is to Australians, as well as being a delicious meal, is it’s an important social custom in South Africa that lasts long after the meat has been cooked and devoured. By all accounts, South Africans take their braais perhaps even more seriously than Australians do. And as any true-blue Aussie would know, we take our barbequing pretty seriously!  But while the main principles of barbeques and braais are generally the same, there are fundamental differences of the celebrated braai that make the mouth water and the heart sing with joy!

As an example, while many favour the ease of a gas flame BBQ, one might argue that a braai simply isn’t an authentic braai without a real wood or hot coal fire giving it that delicious smokey taste. The beauty of Braai’ing is that there are so many ways to do it, from the most sophisticated permanent set-up to the simplest of camping braais set next to or over the campfire. You can braai either inside or out – any time of the day or night. You can use a built-in or semi-permanent wood oven, a braai on wheels, in a fire drum or over a backyard firepit.

Then there’s its versatility. You can use it to cook almost anything! Conventional grilling, baking bread, stir-fry’s, traditional potjie kos, smoked meat or fish, a spit-roast, or even your morning cuppa!

Settling into life in another country can be bittersweet. Both wonderful, and at times, quite lonely, leaving you nostalgic for all the familiar sights, sounds, tastes, and smells you’re so used to. Home is where the heart is, after all. For South Africans, none can be more so familiar or dearly missed than the subtle hint of braai wafting through with the breeze on any given day… or night… or early morning!

Yep, we’ve been there! We understand the heartbreak upon realising that getting your hands on a real authentic braai in Australia is going to be far more difficult than you first thought. And that’s why we’ve spent years pouring a whole lot of heart and soul into designing, engineering, building, testing and retesting the ultimate braai equipment. We’ve thought of absolutely everything to ensure our products are versatile, practical, multi-functional, and most importantly, authentic!

In fact, so good is our products, it’s not just a ‘must-have’ for South Africans, it appeals to foodies of all ages, races and origins – right across this beautiful sunburnt country. Whether it’s a low-key weeknight braai with the kids, a Saturday night dinner and drinks with friends, whether you’re celebrating a milestone or just showing your new Australian friends how it’s done, we have you well and truly covered.

20Rustic Buttermilk Soda Bread with OatsBy OZ BraaiGet ready for a life-changing baking experience as you discover the magic and simplicity of Soda Bread! This incredibly tasty and easy-to-make bread has been delighting taste buds ever since its birth in the mid-19th century in Ireland. The secret ingredient that makes this bread so scrumptious and straightforward to prepare? Baking soda, of course! As the Irish stumbled upon baking soda as a leavening agent, replacing the traditional yeast, they unlocked the door to a world of flavorful, quick, and comforting bread-making. The reaction between baking soda and an acidic ingredient like buttermilk, yogurt, or vinegar creates a delightful rise, resulting in a soft, tender crumb with a slightly tangy taste. In addition, the bread's golden, rustic crust offers a perfect balance of texture that adds to its charm. What makes Soda Bread so unique is its remarkable ease of preparation. There's no need to wait hours for the dough to rise or fuss over complicated kneading techniques. Instead, just the ingredients, shape the dough and pop it in the oven. You'll have a warm, freshly baked loaf with your favourite spread, a hearty soup, or a delicious stew in less than an hour. Not only is Soda Bread incredibly tasty, but it's also versatile. The basic recipe can be tweaked with add-ins, like dried fruits, nuts, seeds, or herbs, to create your signature loaf. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to explore your culinary creativity and savour the delicious outcome. So, what are you waiting for? Embrace the joy of baking Soda Bread, and delight in the savoury simplicity that has captured hearts (and stomachs) since the Irish first introduced this incredible treat. Trust us; you'll be hooked!
