Unless you’re in South Africa, you could forgive the average Joe for thinking a barbeque and a braai are one and the same – or at least very similar. It’s difficult to adequately explain what a braai is to someone who hasn’t been lucky enough to share in the experience.

“Well, it’s like a barbeque……only better.”

“Ha! What could be better than a barbeque?”

‘Braai’ is Afrikaans for ‘barbeque’ or ‘roast’ and, similar to what the barbie is to Australians, as well as being a delicious meal, is it’s an important social custom in South Africa that lasts long after the meat has been cooked and devoured. By all accounts, South Africans take their braais perhaps even more seriously than Australians do. And as any true-blue Aussie would know, we take our barbequing pretty seriously!  But while the main principles of barbeques and braais are generally the same, there are fundamental differences of the celebrated braai that make the mouth water and the heart sing with joy!

As an example, while many favour the ease of a gas flame BBQ, one might argue that a braai simply isn’t an authentic braai without a real wood or hot coal fire giving it that delicious smokey taste. The beauty of Braai’ing is that there are so many ways to do it, from the most sophisticated permanent set-up to the simplest of camping braais set next to or over the campfire. You can braai either inside or out – any time of the day or night. You can use a built-in or semi-permanent wood oven, a braai on wheels, in a fire drum or over a backyard firepit.

Then there’s its versatility. You can use it to cook almost anything! Conventional grilling, baking bread, stir-fry’s, traditional potjie kos, smoked meat or fish, a spit-roast, or even your morning cuppa!

Settling into life in another country can be bittersweet. Both wonderful, and at times, quite lonely, leaving you nostalgic for all the familiar sights, sounds, tastes, and smells you’re so used to. Home is where the heart is, after all. For South Africans, none can be more so familiar or dearly missed than the subtle hint of braai wafting through with the breeze on any given day… or night… or early morning!

Yep, we’ve been there! We understand the heartbreak upon realising that getting your hands on a real authentic braai in Australia is going to be far more difficult than you first thought. And that’s why we’ve spent an entire year pouring a whole lot of heart and soul into designing, engineering, building, testing and retesting the ultimate braai. We’ve thought of absolutely everything to ensure it’s versatile, practical, multi-functional, and most importantly, authentic!

In fact, so good is our Oz Braai, it’s not just a ‘must-have’ for South Africans, it appeals to foodies of all ages, races and origins – right across this beautiful sunburnt country. Whether it’s a low-key weeknight braai with the kids, a Saturday night dinner and drinks with friends, whether you’re celebrating a milestone or just showing your new Australian friends how it’s done, the Oz Braai has you well and truly covered.

10Steak 🥩 Sandwich 🥪 on Turkish or Sourdough RollsBy OZ BraaiHe. Did. It. Again. Harry from Fire to Fork made these amazing steak sandwiches using our Camp Braai and a firepit. It is a very easy recipe and only takes a couple of minutes to put together this amazing meal. The Camp Braai is big enough to make 6 to 8 of these sandwiches at the same time. 20Slow Roasted Rack of 🐑 LambBy OZ BraaiHe needs no introduction and is one of our favourite fire cooks in Australia. Harry from Fire to Fork is also no stranger when it comes to cooking with our Camp Braai and has been using it since the very first version. We've recently contacted Harry asking him if he could help us create some inspiring recipes using our Camp Braai to help give our customers and followers some great tips on how to use the Camp Braai for cooking some awesome meals while out camping. He did not disappoint, and for his first recipe in the series, he prepared a slow-roasted rack of lamb with roasted vegetables on the side at a location that is guaranteed to make all of us VERY Jealous! He used the stand and braai basket next to open flames ON THE BEACH to slow roast the rack of lamb and used a skillet to fry some mouth-watering vegetables. There are two ways to cook with the Camp Braai. 1. You can hang the basket on the hooks and place it next to an open fire for slow roasting OR; 2. You can wait for the fire to settle to get some good coals, place the stand over the coals and put the braai basket on one of the four levels of the stand depending on what you are cooking. We prefer option 1 when it comes to slow roasting a rack of lamb or a full rack of lamb ribs as it helps to cook the excess fat out of the meat. We've even slow roasted 2 flat chooks for 3 hours which gave us ample time to socialise next to the fire. You can choose to use a combination of option 1 and 2. First, slow roasting the meat and then just before taking it off, placing the stand over medium coals and choosing the appropriate height setting for your basket in order to give your meat a quick and final roasting. When cooking meat that does not need slow-roasting, we recommend using option two as this will allow you to cook your meat much faster by selecting the correct heat setting for the type of meat you are using.
10Creamy 🥔 Potato SaladBy OZ BraaiWhat do you call a braai without a creamy potato salad and/or braaibroodjies? a BBQ! To prevent your arteries from clogging up it is probably a good idea to rotate between Potato salad and Braaibroodjies. Maybe with this weekend's braai have your braaivleis(meat) with our creamy potato salad and next weekend with our awesome gourmet braaibroodjies. This is a very quick and easy potato salad recipe that we've perfected over the years.
30South African Sweetcorn 🌽 Pap and Chunky Tomato 🍅 Relish (Pap en Sous)By OZ BraaiMielie Meal or pap is a popular staple food in South Africa. When you're invited to a braai you can be assured that there will be pap served with a rich tomato relish. It is similar to Italian polenta or American grits except that it is usually made of a white rather than a yellow maize variety. In this recipe, we are going to add some additional goodness that will take the traditional pap recipe to the next level. You can serve this as a side dish with any meat. If there are any leftovers the next morning you can eat the pap as a porage by adding some milk and sugar.
20Chicken 🐔 Wings with Blue Cheese 🧀 Dipping SauceBy OZ BraaiThis Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce is a mix of delicious dairy products. Sour cream, greek yogurt and blue cheese. The blue cheese works well with Chicken wings as it gives a slight tang. It can be used as a dipping sauce with a range of different meals.
50Chocolate 🍫 Hazelnut and Banana 🍌 Dessert BraaibroodjiesBy OZ BraaiWe can all agree that Braaibroodjies is really the best thing since sliced bread! You can have it for starters, with your main meal and even as a dessert! This dessert Braaibroodjie recipe will sure be the talk of the night when you serve this after your Braai/BBQ. Tip: Count the memories, not the calories!

Camp Braai. No, not just a camp braai. I used it at my suburban home on the fire pit at the back. Worked a treat. Best thing for me is the variable height adjustment. Not only on the frame but the grill as well. Makes for adjustments on different sized meats. Love how small and compact it is. Just chuck it in any car and of you go. Let’s go camping.

Thanks Oz Braai.

The Oz Braai exceeded my expectations. It appears to be a very high quality product. I am sure it will last for many years (if not decades) as the critical components are made from stainless steel. Well done Clinton and team!

Thanks for good service to get the shipping kinks straightened out.
